Reclaiming Our Language One Word At A Time
Disclaimer: Many of our resources are borrowed from the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
The Cherokee language has been spoken among our mountains of North Georgia for thousands of years. It was spoken when Desoto came across our people in his ventures, it was spoken before Columbus found himself lost on our shores, and it was spoken before our family and friends were shipped off to unfamiliar lands and territories. Over the course of colonization and forced assimilation, our language has been lost to our people. Because of this, The Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee currently has no fluent speakers. It is our goal to hear our language spoken again among the mountains of our ancestors.
Below are some practical ways to incorporate Tsalagi into your daily life!
